Chapter Sixteen
A long phone conversation with Coco the next morning did much to clear Tara’s mind. Coco admitted to betraying her confidence to Hutch—er—Jamie. She had wanted Tara’s honor defended even if Tara hadn’t. Given her friend’s state of mind, Tara did her best to let the incident go. If Brent and Hutch chose to pursue defending her honor, there was nothing she could do to stop them now. Coco had dropped the cancer bomb on Hutch the night before. She’d scared him, of that Tara had no doubt but Hutch held up under the strain. He vowed his love no matter what and his support. What more could Tara ask for her friend?
It was late when Tara padded downstairs in her fuzzy slippers. She’d slept in after the late night out but the day was wasting away and she had much to do. The job search continued, then she needed to visit her mother and she had promised Tommy she’d drop by that night for dinner. There was always shopping to do since she was living out of someone else’s fridge and that long-neglected flowerbed on the west side of the house needed serious tending. Not to mention the gym membership she couldn’t seem to find time for lately. Exhausted by the mere thought of how busy she was, Tara dropped into her oversized armchair with a sigh just as the back door slammed shut.
“It’s just me!” Brent shouted from the kitchen before Tara had a chance to race for the front door and safety. Her heart on the other hand was doing plenty of racing all by itself.
“You scared me!” she shouted back wondering as she did if her racing heart was from the fright or something else entirely as she remembered the goodnight kiss they’d shared. “What are you doing…” she continued shouting but Brent’s sudden appearance in the living room doorway caused her to catch her breath. “…here?” she went on breathlessly, as if her insides hadn’t just turned to mush. “I mean it’s early for you, isn’t it?”
“We’re back up to full crews on every site today so I thought I’d put in a full day here for a change.” Brent leaned casually against the jamb. His arms crossed over his chest. Tara, on the other hand, tried to gain some semblance of dignity by tying her robe firmly around her body to cover her flying bunny pj’s.
“But I thought you promised Hutch only weekends here?”
“That was before our little flu epidemic. Hutch and I talked this morning. He agreed that since we finished the Miller remodel on time and are pretty much on schedule at the other sites, I could be spared a couple of days this week. If that’s a problem, I can find something to do across town,” Brent said, his eyes traveling along her bare legs to rest on her fuzzy bunny slippers. Tara held still although she wanted to tuck her feet out of sight.
